The Market’s Mission is to work with our traders, staff, suppliers and customers to create a culture of environmental consciousness that underpins all our operating practices and supports our emergence as an industry leader and net zero Market by 2030.
At the heart of our mission are several core environmental objectives which are to:
A. Continually reduce waste
B. Recycle as much as possible
C. Minimise energy consumption
D. Use sustainable products and services.
.
Our current provisions and practices have been assessed and an Environment Plan has been developed that will be delivered over the short, medium and long-term from 2023.
This contains a range of practical measures that collectively aim to reduce the Market’s carbon footprint and build upon the foundation of achieving a nearly 50% reduction in general waste and the UK Government’s highest possible energy efficiency rating for the building.
As the Market is managed by the Council, these measures will also support the Authority’s Climate Change Policy.
.
Our short-term goals are to:
1. Reduce general waste generated by the traders by supporting them to implement the new and emerging legislation in Wales.
2. Raise the profile of the Market’s ‘Climate Mission’ and reduce general waste generated by visitors to the Market.
3. Change how we operate the Public Toilets to make them more energy efficient.
Our medium-term goals are to:
1. Seek funding to further upgrade the Market’s existing lighting, glazing and solar panel systems.
2. For cleaning and janitorial services consider changing supplies and sundries to more eco-friendly cleaning and other products.
3. Develop and promote a Market Environmental Pledge.
4. Review and update the Market’s policies and normal operating procedures.
5. Expand trader use of electricity metres across the Market Hall.
Our longer-term goals are to:
1. Subject to funding, undertake works to upgrade the Market’s existing lighting, glazing and solar panel systems including installing additional solar panels to the roof.
2. Seek formal accreditation status for the Market’s environmental ambitions.
3. Develop procurement practices with external contractors that are underpinned by sustainable environmental practices.
